The LearningOnline Network with CAPA

Scalability

LON-CAPA implements a network of two classes of servers:
  • Library Servers hold the authoriative copies of content resources and of user data. An institution can run any number of library machines, and users can be shifted between machines with a few hours downtime. Library servers can double as access servers and run user sessions, which is particularly interesting for small installations. Library servers need backup.
  • Access Servers only run user sessions and do not need backup. They can be brought online and taken offline with minimal downtime.
LON-CAPA can load-balance across the entire network, meaning, session can (if so configured) even be offloaded across institutional boundaries. This can be implemented on a peer-to-peer level, where one server offloads sessions to another one, or with a LON-CAPA load-balancer at the frontend.
